After graduating from NC in 1958, Dick attended and played basketball at Columbia Basin College and EWU. After earning Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from EWU, he began a nearly 50-year career as an educator, coach, and college administrator.
To begin his career, he returned to North Central, where he taught social studies and was an assistant basketball and track coach from 1963-1967. He was head basketball coach at Columbia Basin College (1967-1974) before becoming the head basketball coach at Lewis-Clark State College, where he also served as the school’s athletic director. At L-C State, his teams won 212 games in 15 seasons (1974-1989), including a school record 21 wins in 1985-1986. Dick continued his career as the athletic director at both Weber State University and Southwest Texas State University. In 2001, he became the first Commissioner of the newly formed Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
Dick Hannan has been inducted into the Columbia Basin College Hall of Fame (2017), the L-C State College Hall of Fame (2013), the Northwest Athletic Conference Hall of Fame (1994), and NAIA Hall of Fame (1991). In 2018 he was the recipient of the Eastern Washington University Athletics Hall of Fame Service and Contribution Award.
