Larry Jess’ 67
Spokane Symphony Principal Trumpet
Inducted 2026
Larry formed a band right out of high school. While attending Eastern Washington University, his band often played until past midnight, got a few hours’ sleep, and then that morning went to class. Meanwhile, Larry furthered his craft on the trumpet under the instruction of Jim Albert, a member of the budding Spokane Symphony.
At the time, Larry played local venues like the old Coeur d’Alene Hotel or playing the music of bands like “Tower of Power” and “Chicago” on the road. He was also part of Spokane’s Expo ’74 World’s Fair Brass Band.
In 1969, his second year in college, Larry joined the Spokane Symphony. In 1975 he was named the symphony’s “Principal Trumpet,” and held that position for 50 years. It was his role to play the hardest parts and lead the trumpet section in style and sound.
Larry was a trumpet instructor for many years at three local universities: Whitworth, Gonzaga, and Eastern Washington. Starting in 1983, he gave private lessons at Amend Music Center on the South Hill, where he was the city’s most sought-after instructor for the trumpet.
